Miesha Tate bares all in ESPN the Magazine (Photo)

UFC women's bantamweight contender Miesha Tate bared it all in ESPN the Magazine's annual body issue. She said in an interview with the magazine that she wanted to show that fighters are feminine.

I want to show that you can be a cage fighter and still be feminine. I hate the stereotype that women who fight are "butch" or "wannabe men." It's nice to be able to embrace being a beautiful, strong woman.

Tate isn't the first UFC fighter to pose in ESPN's annual issue that celebrates an athlete's form. Ronda Rousey, the UFC bantamweight champ and Tate's opponent in December, was on the cover of last year's body issue. Light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was featured in it as well.

She told USA Today she doesn't have a problem embracing her beauty and sexuality.

"It's a fine line to walk, and I think that everyone has a different line to walk. My goal is to be respected first and foremost as an athlete. However, I don't see any problem with a woman embracing her beauty. Sexuality is fine. I'm proud of myself that I'm able to compete in a sport that's mainly driven by men and testosterone. It's not typically something you would picture a woman doing. So I think it's a really healthy balance to have, and it's something that I'm comfortable with and proud of."

In the UFC, there are 13 women in the bantamweight division. Sara McMann and Cat Zingano, who both already have wins, are mothers. Rosi Sexton is nicknamed "The Surgeon" because she has a Ph.D in theoretical computer science and is also an osteopath. This weekend at Invicta, an-female promotion, an even more diverse cast of women will fight. Along with Tate and before her, Rousey, they show the many ways to embrace femininity as a fighter.

Microsoft issues partners Windows XP phase-out marching orders

As Microsoft officials reminded the company's reseller partners on July 8, there are only 273 more days until the Redmondians drop all support for Windows XP.

netapplicationsjune13

?

Starting April 8, 2014, there will be no more patches or updates -- including security ones -- issued for Windows XP. This is despite the fact that Windows XP still had an estimated 37 percent share of all desktop operating systems as of June 2013.

Microsoft and its partners have a lot of work to do between now and then to try to get more businesses off Windows XP. During the first day of the company's Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston, officials reminded resellers and systems integrators of their marching orders around the 11-year-old operating system.

Microsoft's top Windows priorities for its fiscal year 2014 (which began on July 1, 2013) are to move all businesses off XP and to become the number one business tablet in the market, said Erwin visser, General Manager of Windows Commercial, during a breakout session at the show.

Microsoft and its partners would need to migrate 586,000 PCs per day over the next 273 days in order to get rid of all PCs running Windows XP, Visser said. Microsoft's actual goal is to get the XP base below 10 percent of the total Windows installed base by that time, he said.

Visser told partners that there's an estimated $32 billion service opportunity for them in moving users off XP, given that companies are spending an average of $200 per PC to move off XP to Windows 7 or Windows 8.

Microsoft is making available new programs, offers, tools and partnerships to help encourage more users to abandon XP, Visser said. He noted that Microsoft will be spending $40 million in fiscal 2014 to continue its Windows Accelerate Program, which is its pre-sales program for moving more of its customers to a "modern environment." As part of Accelerate, Microsoft pays some of its reseller and integrator partners to create "proof of concept" Metro-Style apps to show customers what's possible if they move to Windows 8.

Microsoft also is extending its??program called "Get to Modern," which is aimed primarily at small/mid-size business (SMB) users. Visser said these kinds of users typically don't plan two to three years ahead for major migrations. As a result, many of these SMBs who still may be running Windows XP, will need partners to help them institute a quick-turnaround XP migration program.

HP and Microsoft also are working together on a new joint XP migration campaign. Details of that program -- which include specially priced HP ElitePads preloaded with Windows 8 for those agreeing to move off XP to Windows 8, are available on the hp.com/goodbyeXP site.

Microsoft officials also touted at the partner conference another new program known as TouchWins, which is a new channel incentive for featured Windows devices. Authorized distributors and resellers who sell PCs and tablets with Windows 8 Pro and touch will qualify for additional benefits, as outlined here.

Explosion rocks Hezbollah stronghold in Lebanon

(AP) ? A large explosion rocked a stronghold of the Shiite militant Hezbollah group south of the Lebanese capital Tuesday, setting several cars on fire and causing an unknown number of casualties, security officials said.

The powerful blast came as many among Lebanon Shiites began observing the holy month of Ramadan, and is the worst explosion to hit the area in years ? direct fallout of the civil war raging in neighboring Syria.

With skirmishes between Shiites and Sunnis on the rise around the country, religiously mixed and highly fragile Lebanon is increasingly buffeted by powerful forces that are dividing the Arab world along sectarian lines. Some Syrian rebel groups, which are predominantly Sunni, have threatened to strike in Lebanon after Hezbollah joined Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops in their battle against opposition fighters.

Tuesday's explosion struck the suburb of Beir el-Abed, but it was unclear whether it was caused by a car bomb, officials said. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the blast was near a gas station.

Ambulances and fire engines, their sirens wailing, raced to the area and witnesses said casualties were rushed to the nearby Bahman and Rasoul al-Atham hospitals. People were seen running in the street away from the site of the explosion which set several cars on fire.

The power of the blast shattered windows and damaged several buildings in the busy residential and commercial area.

Hezbollah's Al-Manar TV said the blast was a car bomb inside a parking lot near an Islamic center. The station broadcast footage of a thick plume of smoke rising into the sky at the site of the blast as people rushed to take casualties to the hospital.

In May, two rockets slammed into a Hezbollah stronghold in south Beirut, wounding four people. The rockets struck hours after Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah vowed in a speech to help propel Assad to victory in Syria's civil war.

In June, a rocket slammed into the same area, causing no casualties.

Hezbollah has openly joined the fight in Syria, and the group's fighters were instrumental in a recent regime victory when government forces regained control of the strategic town of Qusair near the Lebanese border.

Lebanon's Sunni Muslims mostly back the overwhelmingly Sunni rebels in Syria, while many Shiites support Assad, who is a member of Syria's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

World's Largest Debt Collection Operation Settles FTC Charges, Will Pay $3.2 Million Penalty

Washington, DC - The world?s largest debt collection operation, Expert Global Solutions and its subsidiaries, has agreed to stop harassing consumers with allegedly illegal debt collection calls and to pay a $3.2 million civil penalty ? the largest ever obtained by the Federal Trade Commission against a third-party debt collector.

In its complaint, the FTC charged that the companies violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and the FTC Act by using tactics such as calling consumers multiple times per day, calling even after being asked to stop, calling early in the morning or late at night, calling consumers? workplaces despite knowing that the employers prohibited such calls, and leaving phone messages that disclosed the debtor?s name, and the existence of the debt, to third parties.? According to the FTC?s complaint, the companies also continued collection efforts without verifying the debt, even after consumers said they did not owe it.

Under the proposed order, whenever a consumer disputes the validity or the amount of the debt, the defendants must either close the account and end collection efforts, or suspend collection until they have conducted a reasonable investigation and verified that their information about the debt is accurate and complete. ?The proposed order also restricts situations in which the defendants can leave voicemails that disclose the alleged debtor?s name and the fact that he or she may owe a debt.?

Also under the proposed order, the defendants must: ?stop falsely representing that they will not call a number to collect a debt; not harass, oppress, or abuse a consumer while attempting to collect a debt; not communicate with third parties about a consumer?s debt; not communicate with a consumer at his or her workplace if it is clearly inconvenient or prohibited by the consumer?s employer; except in limited circumstances, cease communications if a consumer has requested no further contact or if a consumer refuses to pay a debt; and not violate any provision of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.? The defendants also are required to record at least 75 percent of all their debt collection calls beginning one year after the date of the order, and retain the recordings for 90 days after they are made.

With more than 32,000 employees and revenues in 2011 of more than $1.2 billion, the Texas-based Expert Global Solutions and its subsidiaries ? ALW Sourcing, LLC; NCO Financial Systems, Inc.; and Transworld Systems, Inc., which also does business as North Shore Agency, Inc. ? collectively are the largest debt collector in the world.? In addition to their U.S. offices, the companies operate in Canada, Barbados, India, the Philippines, and Panama.

For consumer information about dealing with debt collectors, see Debt Collection.

The Commission vote to authorize the staff to refer the complaint to the Department of Justice and to approve the proposed consent decree, was 4-0.? The DOJ filed the complaint and proposed consent decree on behalf of the Commission in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas on July 8, 2013.? The proposed consent decree is subject to court approval.

Insurance in areas of flood risk | Community Lincs

This consultation is seeking views on the government?s preferred approach to address the future availability and affordability of flood insurance.

The government?s preference is to work with the insurance industry to secure the affordability and availability of flood insurance. ?An initial agreement has been reached on a way forward which would enable people living in the most flood-prone areas to get affordable flood insurance. ?This would replace the current voluntary agreement (the Statement of Principles).

Government will also seek powers in reserve to regulate for affordable cover. ?Having a fallback means customers can have confidence in this issue being addressed one way or another.

The government is seeking powers in the Water Bill to implement these proposals.

The consultation closes on 8 August 2013. You can find out more about the consultation and how to respond by using the link below.

Before UFC 162, Anderson Silva joked the perfect ending to Saturday?s bout was Chris Weidman winning

Anderson Silva's stunning loss opened the door for many MMA fans to yell, "FIX!" There were plenty of tweets to the Cagewriter Twitter suggesting the end of the fight was planned. This interview of Anderson Silva by SportsNet in Canada may added fuel to the fix fire.

Skip to the five-minute mark to see what Silva had to say three days before his loss. For those who can't watch the video, Silva talked about how the perfect ending to his fight would be Chris Weidman being the new UFC champion. He did smile and laugh throughout the interview, and he is known to be downright silly when dealing with the media.

And if you're still absolutely convinced that the ending to the fight was staged, UFC president Dana White has a few choice words for you.

"It happened so fast ? and some of you said it, and I was thinking the same thing ? 'What just happened? Was he goofing around? Is he still goofing around when he's down and he's getting ready to pull guard?' Then they show that replay, and you just see him get clipped, and his eyes just roll back in his head," White said in the post-fight press conference. "Yeah, the fix is in, you [expletive] idiots."

As was noted here on Cagewriter, Silva has put his hands down in fights and clowned around in several of his bouts. Weidman was the first fighter who took advantage of this tendency. That's not a sign of a fix. That's smart fighting.

First Case of Foot Orgasm Syndrome - Health Care, Slimming Tips ...

A Dutch woman has described the unusual condition of having up to six
orgasms a day triggered by her left foot. It is thought to be the first
case documented by medical science.

The 55-year-old would climax while walking, shopping or just standing still.

Experts believe that there may be many more people with what they call "foot orgasm syndrome", but sufferers may be too ashamed to seek professional help or tell anyone what they are experiencing.

The woman, only known as Mrs A, first displayed the symptoms 18 months after having gall bladder surgery.

She began to have spontaneous orgasmic sensations in the sole of her foot.
They ran from her foot to her calf and also to her vagina, where she confessed that the sensations were the same as when she had sex with her husband.

Eventually, Mrs A contacted Utrecht and Leiden universities in Holland where experts put pressure on her foot - and witnessed her having an orgasm in just three seconds.

The authors of the report, published in the National Centre for Biological Treatment noted that the foot orgasm had different attributes to a standard climax. The woman had foot orgasms without feeling any sexual desire.

Unlike normal female orgasms, the foot climax was much shorter, lasting only 5-6 seconds. The orgasmic sensations were "mainly felt in the left foot... and vagina."

Mrs A also reported that the foot-induced orgasms are often accompanied by "vaginal lubrication and loss of urine".

"It was clearly noticeable and accompanied by eye movements, increased respiration and characteristic muscle movements of the hips and upper legs. Following the orgasm, Mrs A was exhausted and had to recover for a couple of minutes," doctors told the Sun on Sunday.

Scientists believe the sciatic nerve in her left leg was damaged during her stay in hospital, stopping the brain receiving signals from the leg, but not from her vagina.

As the nerve in her foot recovered 18 months later, the brain was tricked into thinking signals were coming from her vagina, triggering a climax.

The researchers, who managed to stop the orgasms by blocking off the nerve, added: "We assume that similar cases among humans exist. More attention to this phenomenon may perhaps motivate embarrassed people to talk about it."

The Journal of Sexual Medicine commented: "Further research is warranted to clarify whether this is a rare complaint."

The Dutch woman has been orgasm-free for eight months but may need another injection if her symptoms return, said the doctor treating her.

Obama says U.S. is not aligned with any Egyptian party: White House

By Steve Holland

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama condemned the violence in Egypt on Saturday and said that the United States was not working with any particular Egyptian political party or group as the country reels from a military takeover.

Obama, spending the weekend at the Camp David presidential retreat, convened a secure conference call with members of his national security team to discuss events in Egypt days after a military ouster of elected President Mohamed Mursi and his Muslim Brotherhood-led government.

"The president condemned the ongoing violence across Egypt and expressed concern over the continued political polarization. He reiterated that the United States is not aligned with, and does not support, any particular Egyptian political party or group," a White House statement said.

The Obama administration had grown skeptical of Mursi's ability to lead Egypt. While the United States has expressed concern about the military takeover, it has not condemned it nor called it a coup, prompting speculation that the United States tacitly supports it.

Obama has ordered a review to determine whether annual U.S. assistance of $1.5 billion, most which goes to the Egyptian military, should be cut off as required by law if a country's military ousts a democratically elected leader.

Violence sweeping Egypt in reaction to Mursi's ouster has led to the deaths of 35 people.

The White House statement did not comment on way or the other on the fact that liberal Egyptian politician Mohamed ElBaradei, a former U.N. nuclear agency chief, had been appointed as interim prime minister to lead Egypt's transitional government.

"The United States categorically rejects the false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt's transition should proceed," the statement said.

Washington is urging Egypt's military to move quickly back toward a "sustainable democracy." The White House statement urged all Egyptian leaders to come together in an inclusive process that allows the participation of all groups and political parties.

"We urge all Egyptian leaders to condemn the use of force and to prevent further violence among their supporters, just as we urge all those demonstrating to do so peacefully. As Egyptians look forward, we call on all sides to bridge Egypt's divisions, reject reprisals, and join together to restore stability and Egypt's democracy," it said.

Britain deports radical cleric Abu Qatada after legal marathon

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain deported radical Muslim cleric Abu Qatada to Jordan on Sunday, ending eight years of government efforts to send him home for trial on charges of alleged terrorism.

A plane carrying the cleric left RAF Northolt in west London at around 2.45 a.m. (9:45 p.m. ET), media reported.

"This dangerous man has now been removed from our shores to face the courts in his own country," said Home Secretary Theresa May, whose efforts to get Qatada out of the country had been frustrated by a series of legal rulings.

"I am glad that this government's determination to see him on a plane has been vindicated and that we have at last achieved what previous governments, Parliament and the British public have long called for," she added in a statement.

Once described by a Spanish judge as "Osama bin Laden's right-hand man in Europe", Abu Qatada has been in and out of jail since first being arrested in 2001. He was sent back to prison last March for breaching his bail conditions.

Jordan removed the last obstacle preventing Britain from sending Abu Qatada back home last month by approving an extradition treaty satisfying the concerns of British judges that evidence obtained through torture could be used against him.

May said Britain now needed to take a closer look at its human rights laws "to remove the many layers of appeals available to foreign nationals we want to deport".

The saga had been embarrassing for Britain's Conservative-led government, which wants to appear tough on security and immigration.

Fantasy baseball Prospect Watch: Who to watch in the Futures Game

In 300 at-bats with two teams this season, Byron Buxton has hit .347 with 8 home runs and 60 RBI.

Brace Hemmelgarn/Getty Images

The Futures Game tends to be a lost aspect of All-Star Weekend, but real fantasy hounds know that it's the one place to gather insight on prospects who are not already overrated.

The Home Run Derby notoriously ruins swings for the second half of the season, and an All-Star appearance further inflates an established player's value; however, the Futures Game opens our eyes to players we haven't yet been able to catch on national TV. It gives us three and a half hours of valuable scouting time.

WEEK 14 PREPARATION: Fantasy baseball Weekend Primer | Weekly Planner | Waiver Wire | Pitching Report | Injury Report | Roundtable | Advanced Stat Focus | Prospect Watch

With that in mind, we present our Top 10 Futures Game players to watch. These guys could impact fantasy teams in the second half or become big-time commodities down the road:

1. OF Byron Buxton, Minnesota Twins: The 19-year-old phenom is off to a .400 start (12-for-30) in high Class-A Fort Myers. For the season (he started in low Class-A ball), he has combined to hit .347 (104-for-300) with eight homers, 10 triples, 17 doubles, 60 RBI, 73 runs, 33 steals, a .430 on-base percentage and a .550 slugging percentage. If there is a fantasy game-changer waiting in the wings, Buxton is it. He just might be the best prospect in baseball, even if his ETA is more than a year from now.

2. OF Christian Yelich, Miami Marlins: If not for an abdominal injury, Yelich might have already earned his place in the Marlins outfield. Yelich's numbers -- .266/7/30/28/4/.341/.510 combined in 49 games -- don't stick out in any one category, but he's strong across the board. Out of those playing in the Futures Game this year, Yelich might be the closest to a call-up.

3. 3B Miguel Sano, Minnesota Twins: Sano's average and consistency might have cooled off upon his promotion to Double-A, but the power numbers haven't stopped coming in bunches. After hitting .330/16/48/51/9/.424/.655 in high Class-A, Sano has hit .214/6/17/13/0/.301/.571 for the New Britain Rock Cats. Sano has already drawn comparisons to Miguel Cabrera, and the 20-year-old gives the Twins arguably the two most intriguing long-term prospects in fantasy.

4. SP Taijuan Walker, Seattle Mariners: We already marveled at the Mariners' Triple-A pitching wealth in this column last week, but we are going to get an early glimpse of Seattle's future during the All-Star break. Walker hasn't allowed a run in his two starts since his promotion to Triple-A, striking out eight in five innings in his past start. While Hultzen or Paxton might get the call sooner, Walker is going to earn the fantasy ownership jump because of his exposure.

5. SS Xander Bogaerts, Boston Red Sox: The Red Sox's best shortstop prospect since Hanley Ramirez -- maybe even Nomar Garciaparra -- has held his own upon his promotion to Triple-A, hitting .243/4/11/10/2/.341/.405. In 76 games between Double- and Triple-A, he has totaled .294/10/46/50/7/.391/.478. With Jose Iglesias and Stephen Drew in Boston, Bogaerts is going to be little more than a bench option come September, but he can position himself to compete for the Red Sox's starting shortstop job next spring with a strong second half. This should be an interesting showcase for him.

6. SP Anthony Ranaudo, Boston Red Sox: Ranaudo's stature (he's 6-foot-7, 230 pounds) is somehow still larger than his hype. After 15 Double-A starts, Ranaudo deserves a move up to Triple-A after going 8-2 with a 2.68 ERA, 91 strikeouts and a .196 batting-average against. Pitchers are always needed as attrition sets in later in the season, so Ranaudo stands a good chance of impacting fantasy before the end of this year. He's a must-watch arm.

7. SP Archie Bradley, Arizona Diamondbacks: The seventh overall pick of the 2011 draft might not have the control to impact fantasy this season, but he has certainly showed long-term potential. After making quick work of the hitters in the high Class-A California League, which is famously hitter-friendly, Bradley has combined to go 8-3 with a 1.81 ERA, 112 strikeouts and a .213 BAA in his 17 starts this season. He needs to cut down on his 40 combined walks, but he might be the most impressive pitcher in the showcase.

8. OF Billy Hamilton, Cincinnati Reds: I'm disappointed that Hamilton is in this game and not the Reds' starting lineup right now. After a slow start at the plate, Hamilton's bat has come around. He's still on pace for 100 steals, as he has 49 through 76 games. It will be entertaining to watch him terrorize the catchers in the Futures Game, but he needs to show he can get on base before he gets called up. Also, we will get a look at him as a center fielder, having converted from shortstop this spring. Hamilton was supposed to be impacting fantasy leagues already -- mostly rotisserie formats -- but unless his bat gets hot, he is going to be little more than a bench base-stealer in September for the Reds.

9. SS Carlos Correa, Houston Astros: The Puerto Rican 18-year-old has made good on his promise in his first full professional season after being the first overall pick of the June 2012 First Year Player Draft. Sure, it is just low Class-A ball right now -- where he has gone .324/5/47/48/8/.413/.458 -- but we are going to get a look at him against some elite competition here. He is years away from impacting fantasy but his hot start is setting the bar pretty high.

10. OF Oscar Taveras, St. Louis Cardinals: The fact that Taveras is currently on the Triple-A DL, but still makes this list, is a testament to his potential. We really would like to get to see this potential future fantasy monster. Many might have thought he would have been in the majors by now, even at the ripe, young age of 21, but his modest numbers in 46 Triple-A games (.306/5/32/25/5/.341/.462) show he still has work to do. If his ankle allows him to play, move him up this must-watch list to No. 4.

Below are the complete rosters, barring replacements, as of Friday, July 5.

Why don't spiral galaxies run out of gas? Look to the (extended) halo.

New research suggests that galaxies hold more 'normal matter' than scientists could image. This matter in the form of gas resides in halos that turn out to be about twice as vast as previously estimated.

By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / June 28, 2013

This undated image, made by the Hubble Space Telescope and provided by the University of Utah, shows the Andromeda galaxy, the nearest neighbor to the Milky Way. New research signals that such spiral galaxies include much more 'ordinary matter' than previously estimated, which may help explain star formation.

Spiral galaxies like the Milky Way appear to host far more ordinary matter than previously estimated, according to a recent study. That may help explain why spiral galaxies in the nearby universe are still producing stars at respectable rates when, by all rights, star formation in these galaxies should have run out of gas billions of years ago.

This matter resides as gas in an extended halo nearly 1 million light-years across. For a galaxy such as the Milky Way, whose disk is roughly 100,000 light-years wide, the halo holds as much ordinary, or baryonic matter as the Milky Way's disk, with all of its stars, gas, and dust.

Moreover, this gas, much of which is expelled from the galaxy itself, appears to get recycled ? returning to the galaxy to serve as the raw material for new stars and planets.

The evidence for this baryonic bonanza was gathered by an international team of astrophysicists and astronomers initially interested in some basic accounting, as well as in galaxy evolution.

Over the past decade, researchers have uncovered the recipe for the universe: 70 percent dark energy, a kind of anti-gravity that is accelerating the expansion of the universe; 25 percent dark matter, which astronomers can't see but infer because of its gravitational influence on matter astronomers can see; and ordinary, or baryonic, matter, which astronomers can see directly and exerts gravitational influence as well.

Theory suggests that the proportions of dark and baryonic matter in the universe should hold for galaxies as well. But the amount of baryonic matter astronomers detect in large spirals is only about 20 percent of what theory says should be there.

"Most of the matter is still out between the galaxies," either in a region around a galaxy where its gravity still holds sway, or beyond that in deep intergalactic space, says Michael Shull, an astrophysicist at the University of Colorado at Boulder and a member of the team, which was led by colleague John Stocke, also at the University of Colorado.

The gas is so tenuous, however,. that astronomers haven't been able to capture images of it. Instead, the team used the Hubble Space Telescope's exquisitely sensitive Cosmic Origins Spectrometer to detect the gas, using bright objects called quasars as backlights.

The quasars' light passes through the gas, producing spectra that reveal the gas's abundance, composition, and its motion and velocity.

Two years ago, another research team applied this backlighting technique to galaxies known to have quasars behind them and found evidence for the halos around 42 spiral galaxies. The team estimated that the halos held substantially more gas than the galaxies themselves did.

Dr. Stocke and?colleagues took another approach. In addition to using data from 11 targeted galaxies, the team, in effect,?randomly picked quasars first, then measured the halo of any galaxy that fell in between. That gave then roughly 60 more galaxies for their sample.

The earlier team, in effect, was looking for the lost car keys at night under the streetlight, Dr. Shull quips, while "we went and looked anywhere in the parking lot."

Both groups came up with similar results, he says.

Applied to the Milky Way, the results imply that the extent of the galaxy plus its halo is about twice as large as previously estimated, Shull says.

Temperatures in the halos were on the order of 1 million degrees Celsius, or 1.8 million degrees Fahrenheit. But the halo also held so-called warm clouds, which tended to populate the inner half of the halo and consisted of elements heavier than hydrogen and helium. The team estimates that the warm clouds lacked the mass to account for more than about 10 to 15 percent of the total baryonic matter spiral galaxies should have. But when the hotter halo gas was included, the books could be brought into balance.

The circumgalactic medium also is thought to play a key role in replenishing a spiral galaxy's reserves of gas for star formation, Shull explains.

The warm clouds, relatively rich in heavier elements, likely represents gas expelled from the galaxy, where stars form the heavier elements and enormous stellar explosions called supernovae eject the enriched gas into the circumgalactic medium. Some of that expelled gas doesn't move fast enough to escape the galaxy's gravitational tug and so rains back onto the galactic disk where it can help form new stars, he says.

The warm clouds that remain, however, may provide a vital service to the galaxy ? cooling some of the hotter gas that surrounds it, Shull suggests. This cooled, denser gas has lost energy and so stands a better change of getting drawn in to the galactic disk to serve as additional star fodder.

The team's results appeared recently in the Astrophysical Journal.

US factory orders rise 2.1 percent in May

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Orders to U.S. factories rose in May, helped by a third straight month of stronger business investment. The gains suggest manufacturing may be picking up after a weak start to the year.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday that factory orders rose 2.1 percent last month. April's increase was revised higher to 1.3 percent from 1 percent.

Most of the increase in May was due to a big jump in volatile commercial aircraft demand. Still, businesses also ordered more machinery, computers and household appliances.

A category of orders that's viewed as a proxy for business investment plans ? which excludes the volatile areas of transportation and defense ? rose 1.5 percent. That was even stronger than solid gains in the previous two months.

This measure of business investment hadn't increased for three straight months since the fall of 2011. The consecutive gains suggest U.S. manufacturing could improve in the second half of the year.

Manufacturing has struggled this year after helping propel the economy in the first three years after the recession ended. U.S. factories have seen less demand for exports because of weaker global growth. And businesses reduced their investment in machinery and equipment in the first quarter.

The May report showed that orders for long-lasting goods, from power generation equipment to ships and boats, rose 3.7 percent in May. Orders for nondurable goods, including paper, chemicals and oil, rose 0.7 percent.

Demand for commercial aircraft surged nearly 51 percent, after an 18.4 percent gain in April and a drop of 43.3 percent in March.

Orders for autos and auto parts fell 2 percent, after jumping 4.1 percent in April. Still, the decline is likely temporary.

U.S. automakers on Tuesday reported healthy sales gains in June. Ford Motor Co.'s sales soared 13 percent in June compared with a year earlier. Chrysler's sales rose 8 percent. That suggests auto production will resume a healthy pace in the coming months.

The overall gain in factory orders follows another report that shows manufacturing activity picked up in June. The Institute for Supply Management's index of manufacturing activity rose to 50.9 from 49. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion.

The ISM index showed that new orders and production both jumped. But a gauge of employment fell sharply, suggesting factories cut jobs for the fourth straight month.

The U.S. economy expanded at only a 1.8 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year, the Commerce Department said last week. That was much slower than its previous estimate of a 2.4 percent rate.

The main reason for the downgrade was consumers spent less on services than initially thought. Spending on long-lasting factory goods, such as cars and appliances, was stronger.

Economists expect growth remained tepid in the April-June quarter. Most estimates range between a rate of 1.5 percent and 2 percent.
