'Idol' star pauses career for Mormon mission

By Anna Chan

Season seven "American Idol" runner-up David Archuleta can still make fans scream.

And he did just that at a Christmas?concert in his home state of Utah Monday?night. But this time, the crowd wasn't cheering and giving him a standing ovation for his performance, but for his big announcement: The 20-year-old is putting his singing career on hold to do a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

"It's not because someone told me?that I was?supposed to do it, not because I no longer want to do music anymore," the singer said through tears before his encore. "But it's?because it's the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life. It's just the same feeling I've always followed tried to follow in my life. It's the feeling that's allowed me to have the opportunities I've had, the challenges I've had to overcome and the blessings too. And I've learned to trust that feeling. I've learned that I need to answer when it calls."

Archuleta said his mission will begin next year. Watch his emotional announcement:

Since "Idol," Archuleta has released three albums.

Will his decision hurt or help his singing career? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!

2 Earth-size planets spotted around distant star

This illustration provided by the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics shows artist's renderings of planets Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f compared with Venus and the Earth. Scientists have found the two Earth-sized planets orbiting a distant star, an encouraging sign for prospects of finding life elsewhere. The discovery shows that such planets exist and that they can be detected by the Kepler spacecraft, said Francois Fressin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. They?re the smallest planets found so far outside the solar system. Scientists are seeking Earth-sized planets as potential homes for extraterrestrial life, said Fressin, who reports the new findings in a paper published online Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2011 by the journal Nature. (AP) ? Scientists have found two Earth-sized planets orbiting a star outside the solar system, an encouraging sign for prospects of finding life elsewhere.

The discovery shows that such planets exist and that they can be detected by the Kepler spacecraft, said Francois Fressin of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass. They're the smallest planets found so far that orbit a star resembling our sun.

Scientists are seeking Earth-sized planets as potential homes for extraterrestrial life, said Fressin, who reports the new findings in a paper published online Tuesday by the journal Nature. One planet's diameter is only 3 percent larger than Earth's, while the other's diameter is about nine-tenths that of Earth. They appear to be rocky, like our planet.

But they are too hot to contain life as we know it, with calculated temperatures of about 1,400 degrees and 800 degrees Fahrenheit, he said.

Any life found on another plant may not be intelligent; it could be bacteria or mold or some completely unknown form.

Since it was launched in 2009, NASA's planet-hunting Kepler telescope has found evidence of dozens of possible Earth-sized planets. But Fressin's report is the first to provide confirmation, said Alan Boss of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington. He's a member of the Kepler science team but not an author of the paper.

The researchers ruled out a possible alternative explanation for the signals that initially indicated the planets were orbiting the star Kepler-20. The star is 950 light-years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Lyra.

The planets are called Kepler-20e and Kepler-20f.

Earlier this month, scientists said they'd found a planet around another distant star with a life-friendly surface temperature of about 72 degrees. But it was too big to suggest life on its surface. At 2.4 times the size of Earth, it could be more like the gas-and-liquid Neptune with only a rocky core and mostly ocean, scientists said.

Millionaire convicted of killing wife gets 30-year sentence (Reuters)

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) ? A millionaire convicted of second-degree murder for the shooting death of his wife in their Isleworth, Florida, mansion in 2009 was sentenced on Friday to 30 years in prison.

At the September trial of Bob Ward, 63, jurors heard a 911 call in which he told dispatchers that he had shot his wife, Diane. His lawyers said that Diane Ward was killed when the couple struggled over a gun and it accidentally discharged. His lawyers also said that Diane Ward might have been suicidal.

State experts calculated that Diane Ward was shot in the face from a distance of 18 inches, and testified that it would have been impossible for her to do that. Prosecutors said that she had not seemed suicidal in conversations that day with friends and family, and had just opened a Facebook account.

Bob Ward was reported to have been under stress at the time of the shooting from a business bankruptcy and home foreclosure. The year before the shooting, Ward filed for bankruptcy protection for his real estate development company and stopped making $17,000-monthly mortgage payments on his home, according to news reports at the time of the shooting. The seven-bedroom estate was listed for sale at the time for more than $5 million.

Isleworth, where the couple lived, is a gated subdivision near Orlando known for a car accident involving Tiger Woods, also in 2009. Woods' accident triggered the revelation of several extramarital affairs and led to his divorce.

...what happened to the site?

Why is the background pattern different? Why are the icons nearly indistinguishable and highly illegible (beside forum topics)? ...This is all you Designers' faults, isn't it? I remember you doing something similar for Halloween. >__> Is this going to be a recurring theme around each major season of the year? I hate the thought of giving y'all ideas, but as in, Valentine's Day, Easter, et cetera? (Actually, it IS really pretty. It's just a sudden blow to the mind. :P)
