French police find four shot dead, rush girl to hospital

LYON, France (Reuters) - French police found four people shot dead near a lake in southeastern France on Wednesday, three of them in a British-registered BMW car, public prosecutor Eric Maillaud said.

A fourth body, apparently a person who had been riding a bicycle, was found nearby. A badly injured eight-year-old girl, also found nearby, was taken to hospital by helicopter, he said.

The car was in a parking area off a road that winds through hills near Annecy lake, not far from the French border with Switzerland.

Maillaud said forensic experts would work through the night at the site and that the three dead in the car included a man, who was in the driver's seat, and two women in the back seat. The fourth victim was wearing cycling gear.

"For now we've not got a lot of elements to go on, bar the fact that it's a dramatic event," he told reporters.

A British foreign ministry spokesman said: "We are aware of the reports of the shooting and we are looking into these urgently."

Clinton decries violence in northwestern Pakistan

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, on an Asian tour, condemned a suicide bomber for ramming his car into a U.S. government vehicle in northwestern Pakistan Monday, injuring two Americans.

Clinton said at the outset of a news conference in Jakarta that she wants to "very clearly condemn the attack on our consulate personnel in Peshawar, Pakistan."

"We pray for the safe recovery of both American and Pakistani victims and once again we deplore the cowardly act of suicide bombing and terrorism that has affected so many around the world," the secretary added.

Clinton said it was still too early in the investigation of the incident to talk in broad detail. She did tell reporters that it "appears that a van filled with both American and Pakistani personnel, as well as locally employed staff at the embassy site, were targeted by a suicide bomber who drove a vehicle into this van with the consequence that there were injuries of both Pakistanis and Americans in (the van) and on the ground."

"The information I have is that the Pakistani authorities responded very appropriately to the scene and we don't have any further information at this point," she said. "At this point the injured are being taken care of, some have been airlifted to Islamabad hospitals. But we appreciate the support we are getting from the Pakistani law enforcement and government personnel."

"It is deeply regrettable that there are those who pursue political goals through terrorism," she said.

Clinton was in Indonesia's capital Monday to offer U.S. support for a regionally endorsed plan to ease rising tensions by implementing a code of conduct for all claimants to disputed islands.

Plain packaging reduces the appeal of smoking

Plain packaging reduces the appeal of smoking [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 3-Sep-2012

While Australia has recently passed legislation to ban logos from cigarette packages and to make plain packaging mandatory, other countries are still considering whether or not to take similar measures. New research published in Biomed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health provides a report on the appeal of plain cigarette packs, compared to branded packs, among women in Brazil, and finds that plain packs reduce the appeal of their contents.

Tobacco use is responsible for 5.4 million deaths every year across the world and is a leading cause of preventable death. Like many other countries, Brazil has prohibited most forms of tobacco advertising, but has not addressed the issue of marketing by tobacco companies via the cigarette pack itself.

Research suggests that many brands appear to specifically target young women by use of 'feminine' colored packs, fruit flavorings, or by suggestive terms such as 'slim' or 'superslim'. Scientists from Canada, the US, and Brazil collaborated on this online study of 640 young Brazilian women to see if these cigarettes had the same appeal when presented in plain packaging (but still with the brand name and description on them). As a final test, the women were able to choose which they would have preferred as a free gift, one of the plain or branded packs (although there was never any intension for the packs to be sent out).

Dr David Hammond from the University of Waterloo, Canada, who led this study explained, "The women in this study rated branded packs as more appealing, more stylish and sophisticated than the plain packs. They also thought that cigarettes in branded packs would be better tasting and smoother. Removal of all description from the packs, leaving only the brand, further reduced their appeal. In the pack offer test, participants were three times more likely to choose the branded pack as a free gift."

The results from this study, the first to look at the effect of plain cigarette packaging on smoking in Latin America, backs up research in other countries, which has found that plain packaging makes cigarettes less appealing to young people.

Christine White from the University of Waterloo, Canada, concluded, "Our results suggest that plain packaging and the removal of brand descriptors are likely to reduce the appeal of smoking for youth and young adults. Overall, these findings support the recommendations for plain packaging in the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control."

Family Tree University Has a Virtual Genealogy Conference - Typepad

by Jen Thorpe | More from this Blogger

laptop Typically, a genealogy conference will take place in a building, hotel, or conference center that is large enough to accommodate the crowds. If you cannot travel out to where it is taking place, then you will miss it. It's nice that Family Tree University is having a Virtual Genealogy Conference. This could make it much easier for people to check it out.

Family Tree University is not an accredited college. It is the name of the "learning center" (for lack of a better term) for Family Tree Magazine. It is a great resource for genealogists who want to learn more about their favorite hobby, to brush up on their research skills, and to find out about resources that were previously unknown to them.

This Virtual Genealogy Conference will take place from Friday, September 14 through Sunday, September 16, 2012. The tuition for this course is $199.99. Those who attend get a three-day all-access pass that will enable you to watch 15 pre-recorded video classes and to participate in live chats. You also get a "swag bag" of freebies from ShopFamilyTree.com. Those that want to attend need to register and pay the tuition.

The cost of the tuition is less than what you would spend if you wanted to buy each of the fifteen videos separately. Each individual video costs $29.99. By attending the virtual conference, you actually would save 55% off the total price of all the videos. The website says the savings is equal to getting 8 classes for free.

Each video is about 30 minutes long. They are categorized into three "tracks": genealogy technology track, research strategies track, and ethnic research track. This allows genealogists to easily find the videos that are on topics that are the most interesting to them. Your all-access pass lets you watch all fifteen videos. You can download all the videos and watch them again later.

Genealogists attending the conference can take advantage of the nature of a virtual conference. You don't have to pack, book a flight, or reserve a room at a hotel. Just use your computer, from the comfort of your own home, when you are ready. All the classes are pre-recorded, so you won't miss anything if you happened to sleep-in on one of the conference days.

Check out the Family Tree University website for more details, and to register for the conference. There is a link that will tell you more details about the people who will be presenting the courses, and you can also access a conference program.

Study questions how much better organic food is

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Patient after patient asked: Is eating organic food, which costs more, really better for me?

Unsure, Stanford University doctors dug through reams of research to find out ? and concluded there's little evidence that going organic is much healthier, citing only a few differences involving pesticides and antibiotics.

Eating organic fruits and vegetables can lower exposure to pesticides, including for children ? but the amount measured from conventionally grown produce was within safety limits, the researchers reported Monday.

Nor did the organic foods prove more nutritious.

"I was absolutely surprised," said Dr. Dena Bravata, a senior research affiliate at Stanford and long-time internist who began the analysis because so many of her patients asked if they should switch.

"There are many reasons why someone might choose organic foods over conventional foods," from environmental concerns to taste preferences, Bravata stressed. But when it comes to individual health, "there isn't much difference."

[Related: When is buying organic worth it?]

Her team did find a notable difference with antibiotic-resistant germs, a public health concern because they are harder to treat if they cause food poisoning.

Specialists long have said that organic or not, the chances of bacterial contamination of food are the same, and Monday's analysis agreed. But when bacteria did lurk in chicken or pork, germs in the non-organic meats had a 33 percent higher risk of being resistant to multiple antibiotics, the researchers reported Monday in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

That finding comes amid debate over feeding animals antibiotics, not because they're sick but to fatten them up. Farmers say it's necessary to meet demand for cheap meat. Public health advocates say it's one contributor to the nation's growing problem with increasingly hard-to-treat germs. Caroline Smith DeWaal, food safety director at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, counted 24 outbreaks linked to multidrug-resistant germs in food between 2000 and 2010.

The government has begun steps to curb the nonmedical use of antibiotics on the farm.

Organic foods account for 4.2 percent of retail food sales, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It certifies products as organic if they meet certain requirements including being produced without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, or routine use of antibiotics or growth hormones.

[Related: Organic meat may have higher parasite risk]

Consumers can pay a lot more for some organic products but demand is rising: Organic foods accounted for $31.4 billion sales last year, according to a recent Obama administration report. That's up from $3.6 billion in 1997.

The Stanford team combed through thousands of studies to analyze the 237 that most rigorously compared organic and conventional foods. Bravata was dismayed that just 17 compared how people fared eating either diet while the rest investigated properties of the foods themselves.

Organic produce had a 30 percent lower risk of containing detectable pesticide levels. In two studies of children, urine testing showed lower pesticide levels in those on organic diets. But Bravata cautioned that both groups harbored very small amounts ? and said one study suggested insecticide use in their homes may be more to blame than their food.

Still, some studies have suggested that even small pesticide exposures might be risky for some children, and the Organic Trade Association said the Stanford work confirms that organics can help consumers lower their exposure.

CSPI's DeWaal noted that difference, but added that the issue is more complicated. Some fruits and vegetables can harbor more pesticide residue than others ? she listed peaches from Chile as topping a recent testing list. Overall levels have dropped in North American produce over the last decade as farms implemented some new standards addressing child concerns, she said.

"Parents with young children should consider where their produce is coming from," DeWaal said, calling types grown in the U.S. or Canada "a safer bet" for lower pesticide levels.

As for antibiotics, some farms that aren't certified organic have begun selling antibiotic-free meat or hormone-free milk, to address specific consumer demands, noted Bravata. Her own preference is to buy from local farmers in hopes of getting the ripest produce with the least handling.

That kind of mixed approach was evident in a market in the nation's capital Thursday, where Liz Pardue of Washington said she buys organic "partially for environmental reasons." Pardue said she doesn't go out of her way to shop organic, but if she does, it's to buy mostly things that are hard to wash like berries and lettuce.

Michelle Dent of Oxon Hill, Md., said she buys most of her groceries from regular chain stores but gets her fruit from organic markets: "It's fresh; you can really taste it."

Anna Hamadyk of Washington said she buys only organic milk because she has a young son.

"I would love to buy everything organic, but it's just too much money," said Hamadyk, who also shops at local farmers markets.
