According to a new study published online in the journal Hypertension, researchers from the University of L'Aquila, Italy, have found convincing new evidence that cognitive function in elderly people with early memory decline can be improved by regular consumption of dietary cocoa flavanols.

The study shines new light on the benefits of flavanols, particularly with regard to regular cocoa flavanol consumption on cognitive function in people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI).

Even though earlier research had indicated that the benefits of cocoa flavanols could also apply to the brain, it either consisted of short-term research or was unable to demonstrate a consistent cognitive benefit. The new study has done both, and the findings allow researchers to better understand the possibility of slowing or even reversing cognitive declines linked to aging by consuming these natural compounds.

Flavanols are natural compounds that are particularly abundant in cocoa; substantial evidence has shown that consuming cocoa flavanols helps support healthy circulation and cardiovascular health.

Study-author, Dr. Giovambattista Desideri, Director of the Geriatric Division of the University of L'Aquila, said:

"For the first time, regular cocoa flavanol consumption has been shown to positively affect cognitive function in older adults with early memory decline.
Importantly, the improvements in cognitive function were seen over a relatively short period of time; and, while further research is required to confirm and expand on these findings, this provides encouraging evidence that regular consumption of cocoa flavanols might be effective in improving cognitive function in elderly subjects with Mild Cognitive Impairment.
The findings provide promising indications that the development of novel dietary approaches for improving health as we age - especially cognitive health - is a real possibility."

Airstrikes kills over 40 in northern Syria, watchdog group says

Syrian government airstrikes on a residential neighborhood in a rebel-held town killed over 40 people and wounded at least 100 others including many women and children, international watchdog Human Rights Watch said Thursday.

The strikes on the town of Azaz in northern Syria a day earlier leveled the better part of a poor neighborhood and sent panicked civilians fleeing for cover. So many were wounded that the local hospital locked its doors, directing residents to drive their injured to the nearby Turkish border for treatment on the other side.

Sense of control

The bombardment appeared aimed at rattling the sense of control that rebels have sought to project over the northwestern corner of Syria near the Turkish border since they drove President Bashar Assad's army from the area last month.

Reporters from The Associated Press saw nine bodies in the bombings' immediate aftermath, including a baby.

Human Rights Watch, which investigated the site of the bombing two hours after the attack, put the number at over 40.

"This horrific attack killed and wounded scores of civilians and destroyed a whole residential block," said Anna Neistat, the group's acting emergencies director. "Yet again, Syrian government forces attacked with callous disregard for civilian life."

HRW said two opposition Free Syrian Army facilities in the vicinity might have been targets of the Syrian aircraft.

Home to 35,000 people

One was the headquarters of the local Free Syrian Army brigade two streets away from the block that was hit. The other was a detention facility where the Free Syrian Army held "security detainees" ? government military personnel and members of pro-government shabiha militia. Neither of these facilities was damaged in the attack.

Azaz, which is home to around 35,000 people, is also the town where rebels have been holding 11 Lebanese Shiites they captured in May. On Wednesday, Lebanese media reported conflicting reports on their fate, but it was unclear whether they had been affected by the bombing.

In Damascus, the U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos said the Syrian conflict has "become more intense and is too often indiscriminate."

"All parties must do more to protect civilians," said Amos at the end of the three-day mission to try to open more channels for international aid inside Syria.

GM's Opel in talks to shorten working hours

HAMBURG (Reuters) - U.S. automaker General Motors' German unit Opel is in talks with workers to cut their hours at its main Ruesselsheim plant in response to weakening demand for cars in Europe, and could seek government subsidies to compensate lost wages.

GM lost $747 million on its European operations last year as a weak economy hit car sales in the region, forcing carmakers to confront high fixed costs and excess production capacity that GM has said equates to 10 plants.

The "deteriorating market situation in Europe" had led it to negotiations with the works council and labour union IG Metall over reduced working hours, the company said in an e-mailed statement on Thursday, confirming an earlier newspaper report.

Opel said it expected to conclude talks shortly for shortened working hours in Ruesselsheim, where it makes the Insignia sedan and the Astra compact car.

Of almost 14,000 people who work for Opel in Ruesselsheim, the 3,500 factory workers are likely to be most affected. A spokesman said it was not yet clear how working hours could be reduced in administrative jobs.

German daily Allgemeine Zeitung Mainz earlier cited company sources as saying Opel was also considering shortened working hours at Kaiserslautern, a plant with 2,500 workers that makes components. Opel did not confirm that information.

The works council in Ruesselsheim declined to comment on the matter. IG Metall was not immediately available for comment.

Opel has four plants in Germany - in Ruesselsheim, Bochum, Kaiserslautern and Eisenach.

GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES

In June, Opel's supervisory board approved a medium-term business plan, which runs through 2016, in a step towards returning to profitability.

The plan involves "massive" product investments, a revamped brand strategy, an increase in exports, cuts in material, engineering and development costs as well as added savings from its alliance with France's Peugeot Citroen .

But real savings in a restructuring will not come until GM negotiates a deal with labour unions to close Opel's plant in Bochum, Germany, after 2016.

Utilization at the Bochum plant is relatively high thanks to the popularity of the profitable and fashionable Zafira compact minivan. Opel has no plans to shorten working hours in Eisenach, where it makes the Corsa subcompact.

If management and labour agree to shorten working hours at Ruesselsheim, Opel can apply for subsidies under the German government's short-work program, called "Kurzarbeit".

The scheme was used by many struggling companies in the 2008-2009 recession, allowing them to preserve jobs by cutting employees' hours when plant usage was low and having the government compensate workers for part of their lost wages.

The government pays workers in the program 60 percent of their net lost wages for up to six months, or 67 percent if they have children.

At the height of the global financial crisis, more than 1.4 million workers in Germany received money under the program.

That figure stood at only about 80,000 in May, but several companies have had to seek subsidies in recent months.

U.S. automaker Ford applied for shortened working hours at its German plant in Cologne in April, hit by a slump in demand for cars in southern Europe.

Opel has not yet filed an application but has requested an urgent appointment with the head of the labour office in Darmstadt, which covers the Ruesselsheim plant, to discuss shortened working hours, a spokeswoman for the office said.

I am new to this board, i hope i am posting in the right place?? I will start out by saying, i have not been diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma, but i sure am scared by symptoms that i have been having!!? With that said, i am hoping that you guy's could help me out.

Although, i have not been diagnosed w/ leukemia or lymphoma, i am a cancer survivor of 2 years.? After repeat attempts at IVF for fertility issues, my hormone levels kind of went a bit crazy leading me by surprise to uterine cancer.? That diagnosis is a story all in it's own, but i will say that unfortunately the surgeon doing my surgery failed to take lymph nodes, even though i had a rather large tumor 10x5 cm for that type of malignancy. My oncologist has told me all along, that puts me at a signficant risk for recurrance.?

This is where i am hoping for some help, for some time now i have been bruising on both legs for no reason at all, it is constant.? I have an enlarged lymph node under my jaw on the left side of neck (submandibular lymph node) since early may.? I went to my PCP with that and she did the practical protocol of antibiotics, i did 2 rounds with no change, and i never felt as if i had any type of infection anyways.? I had a CT, that revealed the lymph node to be enlarged along with the gland beside it.? My PCP, said she would monitor it, but i really thought that i should have it biopsied given my history, and i have read that, you really don't know anything unless biopsied, i went along, but giving some thought, i don't believe she is too familiar with any of this.? This lymph node is still as prevalent as it was the day i discovered it and feels very firm and attached, and painless.? I have now discovered a lump, on my left leg above knee on back of thigh, that is also painless.? So as you can imagine, the concern is getting worse.? I am also finding myself going from feeling a normal temperature to all out sweating on a daily basis, it comes and goes, comes and goes.? I also have intermittent left side back pain in the cervical back area (upper back) that i have been having for a year now, no idea if that is related.? I know, i should have went straight to my oncologist with all this back in early May, but decided instead to go to PCP, i don't even really have a reason why i chose to go that route, and have been told by various people to run to the oncologist and don't stop or look back!!? Just as a side note, back when, i was diagnosed with the uterine cancer, i had received 11 blood transfusions, prior too.? I don't know if that means anything.

So, i am hoping for information/advice, i truly appreciate anything that you can share with me.? I feel as if, i have dropped the ball on this and am letting too much time slip by, feeling very insecure. Thank's so much for any help!!!
