STAY HEALTHY BY TAKING TIME TO DO NOTHING

Today as I lie in Shivasana after my Hot Bikram Yoga class, our instructor commented at how important it is to take time every week to do absolutely nothing.? As he said these words, I thought about how that exact moment every week was the only time I do just that. I?m a working mom and even when I?m lying in bed at night, trying to settle my mind, I?m making lists in my head; ?Follow up with that client, drop off the dry cleaning, buy poster board for my son?s school project??

Some of you may be thinking that you already have some downtime every week. But, taking a walk, sitting in front of TV or reading a book is not what I?m referring to.
Yes, that may be good downtime, but your brain is still working. I?m talking
about completely shutting everything off; brain and body. Find a moment every
week, or better yet, everyday, to meditate.

We lead incredibly busy lives. For many of us we are suffering the effects of tough
economic times and working two jobs or overtime to just make ends meet. Add
quality time with family, household duties and time everyday to get your
workout in and there just doesn?t seem time to work in the ?do nothing? part to
the schedule. ?But, it?s critical to finding a healthy balance in your life.

The brain waves of meditators show why they?re healthier. Neuroscientists have found that meditators shift their brain activity to different areas of the cortex ? brain waves in the stress-prone right frontal cortex move to the calmer left frontal cortex. This mental shift decreases the negative effects of stress, mild depression
and anxiety. There is also less activity in the amygdala, where the brain
processes fear.

When you take the time to find the calm and serenity in life you provide a different
level of adrenaline to your body than you do during an intense workout like P90X. When
you take the time to meditate you provide enrichment to your soul, just as you
would during prayer. So, find time and space in your life for just you and
nothing else this week and let me know how it feels.

Wednesday: Insanity Cardio Intervals, 5:15 am

Thursday: P90X-2 PAP Lower, 7:00 am

Friday: QVC
with Tony. Check us out at 2 am and 7pm. I?m sure there will be a tough workout
with Tony in between!

Saturday:
Early AM workout with Tony at gym before heading home.

Sunday: Hot Bikram
Yoga, 4:30 pm
