Males married at an average age of 22.5 years while women got married at an average age of 20.1 years. More people got married after high school, while those women who went to college got married while still in college.

The increase in marriage rates subsequently led to an increase in family size. The average number of children born by women in these years increased to a peak of about 3.77 children in 1957.
