NKOTB's Donnie Wahlberg Helps Fan Get New Kidney Through Twitter

NKOTB's Donnie Wahlberg Helps Fan Get New Kidney Through Twitter

Donnie Wahlberg admits to being a "Twitter-aholic." But  now the New Kids on the Block singer has put his addiction to good use -- and may have just saved the life of one of his fans.

"Basically, a few of my Twitter followers retweeted a blog (called 'Love Can Do Anything') about a fan named Bobbette who was in desperate need of a kidney transplant," he told The Boston Herald. "So I saw the tweet, read the link and then retweeted and asked for help."

The social media post reached Wahlberg's 183,000-plus followers, and sent a flurry of calls to Vanderbilt University Medical Center from people who wanted to help the singer's ailing fan. Six matches were found for Bobbette Miller, and she is currently scheduled to undergo the kidney transplant this June.

"Back when we found out Bobbette needed a transplant, her kidney was functioning around 20 percent," Miller's best friend, Abbie Vicknair, told the paper. "I knew I had to reach a lot of people in the fastest way possible, so I posted the blog on Twitter. And within two hours, I saw that Donnie retweeted the link. I stopped dead when I read it. I couldn’t believe he did it."

Though Vicknair swears "Donnie helped save my friend’s life," the New Kid says he was just a small part of the "team effort" and that it just goes to prove that good can come from Twitter.

Says Wahlberg: "It’s a testament to the value of Twitter when used for more than telling people what one is eating for dinner or using it to sell products by tweeting as an #endorser."
