Parade marks third president for band since 2000

Barack Obama will be the third U.S. president that Northern State musicians have performed for in recent years.

?Northern students performed twice in the presence of George W. Bush ? at the 2005 inaugural parade and at a 2002 speech at the Barnett Center.

?The band also played when former President Bill Clinton spoke on the steps of Graham Hall in 2008. Clinton was campaigning on behalf of his wife, Hillary.

?

TV coverage

?CSPAN will air uninterrupted coverage of the president's inauguration and inaugural parade on Monday.

?Midcontinent subscribers can find CSPAN on Channel 77.

?Portions of the parade will also air on other channels, such as CNN and Fox News. South Dakota Public Television's live coverage of inaugural activities is scheduled to end at 1 p.m.

?The parade is slated to start at 1:30 p.m. CST. But Andi Fouberg, who works in the office of Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., said the inaugural parade often gets a late start.

?

Famous name

?Walt Cronkite, the grandson of the famous newscaster, called Northern State University on Wednesday, seeking information about the Marching Wolves.

?Cronkite is a producer for CBS News, said NSU spokeswoman Brenda Dreyer. The young Cronkite spoke to Dreyer, the NSU Foundation and Boyd Perkins, NSU director of bands.

?And that's the way it is.

?

Carrying banner

?After playing basketball games Friday and Saturday, Northern student Yvonne Freese will fly out of Aberdeen Sunday to join the marching band in Washington, D.C.

?Freese is one of two people who will carry the NSU banner in the inaugural parade. In addition to basketball, Freese is known for her singing and acting. The other banner carrier will be Mallory Beckler, the daughter of associate director of bands Terry Beckler.

Central choir made trip in 1985

?NSU music professor Terry Beckler has been involved in another inaugural parade.

?In 1985, he was one of the Aberdeen Central choir members who journeyed to Washington for the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan.

??We were supposed to ride a float in the parade, and there was such a blizzard that they canceled the parade,? Beckler said. ?I think it?s the only one they've ever canceled.?

?The Central students were on hand, but there was no parade to take part in.

??I just remember freezing to death,? said Beckler, a Central senior at the time.

?

Other Midwest units

?The Marching Wolves won't be the only parade unit from this part of the country.

?Among the other bands performing Monday will a high school band from Fergus Falls, Minn., an American Indian group from North Dakota, the Wind River Dancers from Wyoming and a law enforcement honor guard from Sarpy County, Neb.
